Illegal immigration and ICE

I’ve nothing against the individual agent working for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). You talk about a thankless job! Imagine being given a set of laws and regulations and then being told “Whatever to do, don’t enforce them, unless we need a photo op!” by your bosses. When I was in law enforcement is was a running joke about calling ICE when we found an illegal, which was about every twenty minutes in my city. About every two weeks or so, one of our old grizzled sergeants, with time on his hands, would call the hotline just to see what would happen. Every time, he would get the same answer, nobody was coming to pick the arrested illegal up, or put a hold on him. There just wasn’t the manpower, the time, or the political will in Tallahassee or D.C. to do the job.

We’d catch carloads of illegals, many with fraudulent social security cards and other forms of identification (A crime, but never enforced) and release them as though they were citizens, sometimes even quicker, like we had something nasty stuck on our hands. The reason was we didn’t want to get hassled by the open border people any more than anyone else. The funniest thing was writing a traffic ticket to a driver who had fake ID or a proper ID issued by the state based on false documents and knowing full well we’d never see the driver again! Even more side splitting was watching the rookie patrolmen just go apoplectic when they found out they couldn’t do anything, despite the driver violating about a half dozen state and federal laws.

The problem with catching illegals is twofold; One, you usually have a volume issue. At one time, during the construction boom, almost every construction site was filled with illegals working. That meant about every fifth car on the road in the morning or afternoon was stuffed with illegals driving to and from the job. We could, on any given day, round up a hundred or better if we wanted to. But then what? ICE won’t take them. The county jail flipped out if we even thought about stuffing them over there. So, unless we wanted to take them home as strays, we had to let them go on their way. Now by and large, as I have said before, the majority of illegals are just hard working people trying to make money to send home and I respect that. But they are still violators of the law. However, that doesn’t hold water when they are also part of the political equation, which led to the second problem. GW, Jeb Bush, and the Dems had a running battle over which was going to get the Hispanic vote. That made enforcement of deportation laws almost radioactive. It was just what it was, and we knew it. So, every time you see Michelle or anyone post the story “illegals did something to someone” and wonder why the cops aren’t doing the job, remember it isn’t our guys, it is the politicians who are willing to trade security, our health and our lives for votes.

This is one reason why I won’t vote for Jeb Bush, nice guy that he is, if he runs for national office. We need a time for a reevaluation of who we are as a nation and how we maintain our national health. Controlling the border is part of that equation.
